The prize – 2 students, and their teacher, will be given the opportunity to travel to Africa to see and become involved in one of ActionAid’s education projects. The winners will be flown to Uganda to meet with education lobbyists, school children from local schools and political leaders to learn more about the plight of 72 million children worldwide who still don’t have access to basic education.

In 2008, the UK organisation ‘Send my friend to School’ offered a similar prize, with students James and Bethany producing this short video which detailed their trip. Please have a watch to see what an exciting and inspiring trip this was for them.

Now the details, here’s how to enter, it is really quite simple!

Create a 2 minute video about why you and we should support 1Goal: Education for All.
In a short, (maximum 750 words), written piece, tell us why education is important to you, and why it is important that governments improve their aid for basic education.

Successful shortlisted entries will be interview in person (if in Sydney) or by Skype link up by a panel of Judges from ActionAid and a 1Goal: Education for All Ambassador, with a winner selected shortly after.
Most importantly, if you are thinking about entering, we’d love to hear from you and offer some handy tips, so just send an email to compeittion@join1goal.org.au letting us know who you are and where you go to school and we will get back to you as soon as possible with some great tips.

Schools worldwide this year joined together to take part in inspiring and educational activities for the 1GOAL: Education for All Campaign.

On the 20th April 2010, over 15 million school children from over 100 nations around the world took part in the 1GOAL Global Action Week, which was a world record attempt backed by some of the world’s biggest names in football who had come out to support what promises to be footballs biggest ever campaign.

In Australia, we saw two notable lessons, the first taking place at South Granville High School in Sydney’s western suburbs which was attended by ex-Socceroo Francis Awaritefe, TV personality Stephanie Brantz and Federal MP Laurie Ferguson. Together the trio helped teachers from South Granville teach the students about the 1GOAL campaign and why it is so important that our world leaders do more to help the 72 million children worldwide who still don’t have access to basic education.

At Melbournes - Essedon Keilor High school, a similar event was held with the assistance of another ex-Socceroo - John Aloisi, as he talked to the students about his experiences with school and his thoughts on the campaign.

To get a feel for the events, please have a look at the collection of photos that are posted here

Elsewhere around the world, we were able to achieve these amazing feats:

  1. Bangladesh: Over 3 million people to take part in the Big Lesson

  2. Nigeria: Over 500,000 children to participate in the lesson and former Nigerian player Jay Jay Okocha has been visiting schools in country

  3. Japan: Children teaching the lesson in parliament to members of parliament

  4. South Africa: 50,000 children to participate in the lesson

  5. US: Actress and Advocate Jessica Alba who has recently returned from South Africa to launch 1GOAL in Washington DC with lessons planned across the country

  6. Congo: 1GOAL matches in the national stadium and more than 300 schools in Kinshasa taking part in the lesson

With the campaign just hitting it’s strides now, we would still love for you and your class to be involved in the lesson to help spread the campaigns message and add to the number of signatories for our petition. To learn more about the lesson, please have a read through our Lesson Overview plan which can be found here or you can jump straight in by downloading the schools pack below which contains an assortment of helpful goodies to prepare for your class.

This is an exciting way for your students and teachers to incorporate education, fun and the excitement that comes with the FIFA World Cup into your learning, and we hope that you will join with the millions of others and be part of this exciting global event.
